Un oeil sur l'UE

The System Is Failing Us

The System Is Failing Us

Across Europe, democracy and human rights, values that once seemed untouchable, are under pressure. Corruption scandals, political interference in courts and attacks on media freedom have exposed cracks in the institutions we trusted to protect us. When independent journalism is silenced, and civic space shrinks, democracy becomes fragile.

Why This Matters Now

Human rights are not abstract principles; they shape our everyday lives; freedom of speech, equality, and dignity. Yet, recent reports show worrying trends: Freedom House notes that democratic scores have declined in 11 EU Member States over the past decade, and hate speech incidents have surged by nearly 50% since 2020. These numbers are more than statistics; they signal a Europe where rights are eroding in plain sight.

Our Generation’s Responsibility

We cannot afford to be passive observers. As the next generation of leaders, policymakers and citizens, it is our duty to defend these rights and restore trust in democratic institutions. This means demanding transparency, supporting independent media and holding governments accountable. It means speaking out when rights are violated, whether in our own country or across borders.

A Call to Action

As Iratxe García Pérez, President of the Socialists and Democrats Group, warned: “Democracy is not guaranteed. It is fragile, and it needs all of us to protect it every single day.”

Democracy survives only when people fight for it. Europe’s future depends on us, on young voices refusing to accept corruption, inequality and authoritarianism as the norm. Protecting democracy and human rights is not optional; it is the defining challenge of our time. If we fail, we risk losing the freedoms that generations before us fought to secure. And if we succeed, we will shape a Europe that truly reflects the values of justice, equality and solidarity. The choice is ours, and the time to act is now.
