The environment is one of the main concerns of the European Union. For this reason, in 2019, at the COP 25 in Spain, the European Commission adopted the Green Pact, an action plan to implement the EU’s environmental commitments.
The importance of the Green Deal in the EU
The European Green Deal is a set of measures to move the EU towards a green transition with the main objective of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. A green transition is urgently needed to reduce carbon emissions. This will provide important opportunities for economic growth, new business models and markets, job creation and technological development. The Green Deal for Europe will therefore improve the well-being, health and quality of life of citizens and future generations by providing many benefits such as:
- clean air, clean water, healthy soil and biodiversity
- renovated and energy efficient buildings
- healthy and affordable food
- more public transportation services
- cleaner energy and advanced clean technology innovations
- more durable products that can be repaired, recycled and reused
- sustainable jobs and skills training for the transition
- globally competitive and resilient industry
What strategy has the European Commission adopted?
The European Commission has provided a Sustainable Europe Investment Plan to meet the financial needs of this major project. This plan is the investment pillar of the Green Pact and offers various instruments and policy initiatives to provide the necessary sustainable investments in order to mobilize public investment and attract private resources through EU
financial instruments.
The second strategy foreseen by the European Commission would be to evaluate every five years the efforts made by the Member States in the field of climate change adaptation and carbon neutrality in order to know where each of them stands with regard to this resolution. Moreover, the first evaluation will take place in September 2023.
